Mario's Taco Truck

Updated: Sep 28, 2018

If you ever find yourself driving after dark in San Antonio through what seems like a street side night club, don't worry, you are not hallucinating. The bright flashing strobe lights and neon signs you are passing are signals that you have stumbled into some prime taco truck county. When the sun goes down in S.A., these food trucks start popping up at various corners and parking lots to feed the hungry nighttime crowds. While not full service restaurants, these mobile Mexican kitchens offer some of the best tacos in town. Not only that, but they usually do it quick and at a great price.

That is exactly what I encountered at Mario's Taco Truck. Though the truck actually looked a little familiar for some reason, I think this was my first time frequenting the truck at what I assume is its usual location at Culebra and 19th Street. Just when I was ready to give up on my taco search, the lights caught my eye and I was able to pull a U-turn right into the parking lot. The menu was clearly located on the side of the truck, right by the walk-up counter. The service was good, the delivery was prompt, and the food was dynamite.

While I was tempted by the tortas, quesadillas, and Mexican hamburguesas, I decided on the tried and true street tacos. For my meat, I chose the tangy pork al pastor, which was well marinated and grilled with a nice crispy char. At 5 tacos to an order, double wrapped in hot corn tortillas, and loaded with liberal amount of fresh onion and cilantro, I'd say I made a fine choice. Top it all off with some fiery red and green salsas, squeeze a couple fresh limes, and wash it down with an ice cold Topo Chico sparkling mineral water, and I was in street taco heaven. Next time your cruising through town and the flashing lights catch your eye, don't let the truck fool you. You are in for some seriously delicious tacos!
